About the Programme

Based on the Vaganova Method, our after-school programme emphasises the strong foundation of classical ballet technique and the development of performance excellence. The Russian Vaganova Method is revered for these qualities.

At Queensland National Ballet, teaching and learning based on this syllabus are combined with an enthusiastic and nurturing environment.

Since its launch in 2008, the Queensland National Ballet Excellence Programme has been further developed and incorporates Junior and Senior levels, providing dedicated students with a part-time dance course of distinction.

QNB’s Artistic Director, Martyn Fleming, has created this elite programme for promising dance students aged 8 to 15 years. Students from this programme are immediately recognised for their strong technique, dynamics, musicality, and stage artistry.

QNB class sizes are kept small to ensure that students receive specialised, focused attention. Within the class setting, we recognise the necessity for students to learn as part of a group, and as individuals. Our teachers are dedicated to identifying what is valuable and relevant to each student’s needs and capacities. By focussing what is taught, on a clear understanding of each student’s level of development and readiness to learn, we are supporting their opportunities for a successful future in professional dance.

The high calibre of our teaching staff at QNB is largely due to Martyn Fleming’s career experience and renown. Martyn has danced internationally at the highest level. During his career he worked under the direction of some of the world’s greatest classical and contemporary choreographers.

Martyn performed as principal artist with, among others, The English National Ballet and Bejart Ballet, Lausanne, Switzerland. Through these experiences Martyn is able to offer teachers and students at QNB the guidance to explore skill-based development and artistic expertise.

These opportunities are cultivated in an environment that fosters an awareness of the intellectual, physical, emotional and spiritual facets of the students.
